Change in Plans!

Nurse Kathy here with an update.

Yesterday morning, Dale went for his planned, pre-transfusion blood work.  Easy-peasy and back at home in time for lunch.

An hour or so later, the surgeon's nurse called with news that the blood taken in the morning came back and the values were not good.  Not good at all.  Bad.  Both the surgeon and oncologist/hematologist were both very concerned and wanted Dale admitted to the hospital right away.  We were instructed he would need to go through the emergency room, and they would get him admitted.

Well, if you know my handsome husband, you know that he was not going to jump and drive right over.  No sir!  He had some lunch, did a little computer work, watered the plants in the garden, took a shower, returned a few phone calls and cuddled the pup.  Then he was ready!

We packed up a few things he would want with him and off we went.

We arrived around dinner time to a line of folks waiting in line to check-in at the ER.  We made our way through the line and after multiple times telling them that No, we are not from Muncie (apparently there is a Dale Adelson in Muncie) they were able to get him processed.  They put us in a hallway away from all the folks in the waiting room where we waited for them to find Dale a private room.  From there we went to a private ER room and after a short stay in that room, Dale was moved to a private room.  It's not exactly isolation but they are limiting visitors and all staff are masking when they enter.  I just don't understand why everyone (staff and patients) are not required to wear masks.

It was a long day, but everyone was super kind and Dale was in his snazzy scrubs and off to sleep when I left for home.  It's hard to leave but he needed sleep and our sweet Tikka the dog was waiting at home for me.

This was a long post and I will try to keep it shorter next time.

  1. Oh my goodness! The abrupt change in plans plus the gravity of the situation must have really thrown you both off. I can’t even imagine… I’m glad to know he’s in good hands - and snazzy. 😊 I hope you’re both able to get some rest and that things are more predictable/less stress-inducing moving forward. And thank you for any and all updates. One word, one thousand words, it doesn’t matter - write as you see fit. Hugs to you both!
